Shimla: The unavailability of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) fertilizer during the apple season has increased concerns among apple growers in Himachal Pradesh. Following the discontinuation of CAN production, growers have been forced to depend on more expensive and comparatively less suitable alternatives.
Taking note of the growing concern over its impact on apple production, Himachal Pradesh Education Minister Rohit Thakur has written to Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, informing him about the situation.
Rohit Thakur said the apple industry is the backbone of Himachal Pradesh’s rural economy. The sector contributes around Rs 6,000 crore annually to the state’s economy, with thousands of farming families directly and indirectly associated with it.
He said any shortage in the availability of essential agricultural inputs could directly affect the income of apple growers.
CAN Discontinuation Adds to Growers’ Problems
CAN, containing 25 percent nitrogen, is considered a reliable and affordable fertilizer source for apple orchards. However, after its production was discontinued, growers have been compelled to use alternatives such as urea, calcium nitrate, and mixed NPK fertilizers.
According to the minister, these alternatives are not only more expensive but are also less suitable for the specific nutrient requirements of apple orchards.
In his letter, Rohit Thakur also raised concerns over the long-term use of urea, stating that it could increase soil acidity, affect soil structure, and damage plant roots. He said the availability of an appropriate fertilizer is essential to ensure balanced nutrition in apple orchards.
Concern Over Declining Productivity and Tree Health
The Education Minister informed the Union Minister that apple cultivation in Himachal Pradesh is continuously expanding. However, growers are also facing challenges such as the early deterioration of trees and declining productivity.
He said the shortage of suitable fertilizers could further aggravate these problems. Rohit Thakur urged the Central Government to direct the concerned officials and fertilizer manufacturers to resume the production of CAN and ensure its adequate availability for apple growers.
Nadda Says Matter Is Being Examined
Responding to Rohit Thakur’s letter, Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda assured him that the concerned division was examining the matter. He said necessary action would be ensured while keeping the interests of apple growers in mind.
Following the assurance, Rohit Thakur expressed hope that an early decision would be taken and effective steps would be initiated to ensure the availability of suitable and affordable fertilizer for apple producers in Himachal Pradesh.
