SHIMLA: In a major push to boost tourism and ease travel through difficult mountain terrain, the Union Government has initiated steps to connect four key pilgrimage and tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh through a ropeway network.
Under the Parvatmala Pariyojana, National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), working under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has begun the process of preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the proposed routes.
The four locations chosen for the project are widely recognized both nationally and internationally for their spiritual and natural importance:
Shirgul Mahadev Temple (Sirmour): Located at an altitude of approximately 3,647 meters on the Churdhar peak along the Sirmour-Shimla border, this sacred site is dedicated to deity Shirgul Mahadev, revered as a form of Lord Shiva.
Aadi Himani Chamunda Temple (Kangra): Situated at around 3,185 meters in the Dhauladhar range, this shrine at Nandikeshwar Dham is considered the original and ancient abode of Goddess Chamunda.
Palampur-Thathri-Chunja Glacier (Kangra): Located near Palampur, the Chunja Glacier area is popular among adventure tourists for its challenging trek routes, lush green valleys, and snow-capped peaks.
Bharmani Mata Temple (Chamba): Situated in Bharmour, Chamba district, this prominent religious destination will be integrated into the network.
Four Key Proposed Routes
- Sirmour: Shirgul Mahadev Temple to Churdhar (7.9 km)
- Kangra: Chamunda to Aadi Himani Chamunda (6.5 km)
- Chamba: Bharmour to Bharmani Mata Temple (1.6 km)
- Kangra: Palampur-Thathri-Chunja Glacier (5.7 km)
Consultants have been tasked with performing thorough assessments using advanced technology, geotechnical investigations, topographical surveys, and traffic demand studies. Environmental and forest clearances will also be completed in a time-bound manner.
Once operational, the ropeways will resolve travel issues caused by blocked routes during heavy snowfall. The project will allow elderly and physically challenged devotees to visit these holy sites with ease, while generating new employment opportunities to strengthen the local economy.
