NAHAN: A tragedy unfolded in Lagnu village of Sangrah sub-division in Sirmour district after an elderly couple died within a gap of just 15 minutes on Sunday evening. The couple was cremated together on the same pyre on Monday.
The deceased have been identified as 78-year-old Manga Ram, alias Chhotu, and his 70-year-old wife, Hardevi. Manga Ram, who had been unwell for some time, passed away on Sunday evening due to his illness. Hardevi, who was completely healthy and had been doing household work all day, rushed to his side when she heard he was unconscious and gave him water with her own hands, unaware that he had already passed away.
Upon being informed by family members and villagers that Manga Ram had died, Hardevi could not bear the shock. Shortly after, when she stepped out of the room to go to the washroom, she suddenly felt dizzy and collapsed on the spot, dying within 15 minutes of her husband’s death.
Manga Ram and Hardevi belonged to an ordinary farming family and faced the struggles of rural life together. Even at her age, Hardevi remained active with household chores. The tragic deaths within minutes left the entire village in deep shock.
On Monday, as per local customs and rituals, the couple was cremated on a single pyre on the banks of the Giri river. A large number of villagers and people from nearby areas gathered to pay their last respects. The elderly couple is survived by a family including two sons and grandchildren.
