Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Congress president Vinay Kumar on Monday claimed a sweeping victory for his party in the recent municipal elections across the state. He described the results as a clear endorsement of the Congress government’s work and strong support for its national leadership.
Kumar said the outcome reflected people’s faith in Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s leadership and the party’s commitment to public welfare. He asserted that voters had outright rejected the BJP, exposing what he called the opposition’s “politics of lies”.
“The people of Himachal have put their stamp of strong approval on the pro-people policies and decisions of the Congress government,” Kumar said. He credited the victory to the unwavering trust in Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Speaking to party workers, Kumar highlighted that the Congress remained focused on fulfilling public expectations. He thanked the people for their support and urged elected representatives to work hard on development in their respective wards and towns.
The Congress leader made it clear that the party was already looking ahead to the 2027 assembly elections. “We will repeat our performance and form the government again in the state,” he said confidently.
Kumar asked all party leaders, district presidents and block chiefs to move quickly towards forming the new municipal bodies. He stressed the need for unity and immediate focus on public service. “The councillors who have won carry a big responsibility for the development of their areas. They must ensure that people get full benefit of the state’s welfare schemes,” he added.
Party workers who contributed to the victory will be honoured soon, Kumar announced. He said their hard work would be recognised within the organisation in due course.
Municipal elections in Himachal hold importance for local governance issues like water supply, sanitation, street lights, roads and waste management. These bodies directly affect daily life in towns and smaller urban centres. A strong showing by Congress in these polls is being seen by the party as a positive signal before the bigger assembly battle in 2027.
Political observers in the state note that civic polls often serve as a testing ground for popularity of the ruling dispensation, especially on issues that matter most to common citizens such as prices, employment and local infrastructure. Congress leaders believe their performance shows satisfaction with the government’s approach on these fronts.
The BJP is yet to give a detailed reaction to the claims. The actual results declared by the State Election Commission will determine the exact picture once all wards and bodies are accounted for.
Kumar’s statement comes at a time when both major parties are already positioning themselves for the next assembly contest. For Congress, a good showing in urban and semi-urban areas could help consolidate its base, particularly in districts where municipal bodies play a visible role.
Party insiders said the focus now would shift to effective governance at the grassroots level. Elected councillors are expected to coordinate with the state government to speed up pending projects and address local grievances promptly.
This victory claim, if backed by final numbers, could boost morale within the Congress ranks in Himachal. It also puts the onus on the party to deliver on promises at the municipal level, where people expect quicker and more visible results.
Kumar ended his address by calling upon all sections of the party to stay united and work with dedication. He said the coming months would be crucial for strengthening the organisation and taking the government’s schemes to every household.
