Tesla in India: Electric vehicle giant Tesla is set to open its first store in Mumbai on July 15, officially stepping into India’s automotive retail sector. The company announced on Friday that its Mumbai outlet will function as an “experience centre,” offering customers a firsthand look at Tesla’s offerings.
This move comes after Tesla, under the leadership of Elon Musk, secured a lease for space in Mumbai in March as part of its strategy to enter the Indian market. Tesla has ramped up its recruitment efforts and initially explored locations in both Mumbai and New Delhi for showrooms.
According to Bloomberg News, five Model Y vehicles from Tesla’s Shanghai factory have already arrived in Mumbai, declared at a value of ₹27.7 lakh ($31,988). These imports incurred over ₹21 lakh in duties, aligning with India’s 70% tax and additional levies on fully built imported cars priced below $40,000.
Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy revealed last month in an interview with news agency ANI that Tesla’s primary interest lies in expanding its showrooms in India.
This development marks a significant milestone for Tesla, which has been preparing for its Indian entry for years, primarily lobbying for reduced import duties. However, reports suggest that the EV manufacturer is not yet eager to start component manufacturing within the country, focusing instead on establishing a retail presence.
Tesla in India’s journey
Tesla’s journey into India has been long-awaited, with the company navigating regulatory and fiscal challenges to finally make its mark. The opening of the Mumbai store is a crucial step in Tesla’s global expansion strategy, aiming to tap into India’s growing EV market.
As the date approaches, all eyes will be on how Tesla’s experience centre is received and whether it can catalyze further investments and operations in the region.
