In a landmark achievement for healthcare in Himachal Pradesh, doctors at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Medical College and Hospital in Tanda, Kangra, have successfully performed the state’s first-ever robotic kidney transplant. This breakthrough highlights the growing capabilities of government medical institutions in delivering advanced and life-saving treatments closer to home.
The recipient, 42-year-old Ajay, a goldsmith from Kullu, had been battling kidney disease for the past four years. Initially dependent on regular dialysis, his condition gradually worsened, making a transplant the only viable option. Despite visiting reputed institutions like PGI Chandigarh and Max Hospital, he could not find a solution and eventually turned to Tanda Medical College as a last hope.
After detailed medical evaluation and tests, the nephrology team, led by Dr. Abhinav Rana, decided to proceed with a robotic-assisted transplant. The kidney was donated by Ajay’s wife, Lovely, whose timely decision proved life-saving. The complex procedure was carried out with the involvement of specialists from nephrology, kidney transplant, surgery, and anaesthesia departments, under the guidance of transplant expert Dr. Amit Sharma.
This successful surgery marks a significant step forward for the Tanda Medical College, where doctors have already performed 23 kidney transplants so far. However, the introduction of robotic technology has now elevated the institution’s capabilities to a new level, offering more precise and minimally invasive procedures to patients.
Medical experts believe that this achievement will reduce the need for patients from Himachal Pradesh to travel outside the state for advanced treatments. It also strengthens confidence in the state’s public healthcare system, opening doors for more such high-end procedures in the future.
