Rising day temperatures across plains and hills force residents to limit outdoor activity; IMD predicts marginal relief from western disturbance mainly in higher reaches over next few days.
Himachal Heatwave Intensifies

Himachal Heatwave Intensifies-SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh continued to reel under rising temperatures on Monday as strong sunshine pushed the mercury higher across both plains and mountainous regions. Several areas that usually remain cool are now experiencing noticeable heat during the day, making it difficult for people to step out.

Una emerged as the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 39.7 degrees Celsius. Other places also recorded high temperatures, including Bilaspur at 38.5°C, Sundernagar at 38.1°C, Hamirpur at 38°C, and Kangra at 38.3°C. Mandi and Barthin areas also witnessed intense heat.

In Shimla, the maximum temperature touched 28.6°C, which is higher than the corresponding period last year. Dharamshala recorded 35°C, while Sundernagar saw its hottest day of the season so far.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a further rise in temperatures over the next 72 hours. Daytime heat is expected to feel more intense in the plains due to strong sunshine and hot winds. Officials said there is little chance of relief from the heat in the immediate future.

Western Disturbance to bring limited relief
The IMD stated that a fresh Western Disturbance is likely to become active over the state from Tuesday. However, its impact will remain limited and mostly confined to higher hills. Light rainfall or scattered showers are possible in some upper reaches.

According to the weather office, light rain and thundershowers are likely in higher hilly areas between May 19 and 21. Rain may occur in several parts of the state on May 22, while higher regions could see weather changes on May 23 and 24 as well. Plains areas are expected to remain under the grip of heat.

The meteorological centre in Shimla has warned of strong winds, gusting up to 30-40 kmph, in Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi districts. People have been advised to exercise caution during adverse weather.

Eleven cities cross 35°C mark
As many as 11 cities in the state recorded maximum temperatures above 35°C, indicating that summer has made its presence felt even in the hills this year. Residents will need to prepare for both continued heat and the approaching weather shift.

Temperature recorded on Monday:
