Gold Loan: Gold in India has traditionally served as savings and a secure asset, but its role is shifting as households increasingly leverage family jewellery for loans rather than keeping it idle. Latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) shows that gold loans provided by Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) grew by nearly 70% year-on-year in June 2026, significantly outpacing the total retail credit growth of 20.3%.
Once seen primarily as a last-resort option for emergencies like medical bills or sudden cash shortages, gold loans are now integrating into broader financial planning. Pooja Abhishek Singh, CEO of Manipal Fintech, noted that individuals are deploying gold loans for planned expenditure, such as business working capital, children’s education, and other essential needs.
Compared to personal loans, gold loans rely on existing physical gold as collateral, making credit accessible to self-employed individuals or those with weaker credit histories. The process requires minimal documentation and benefits from rapid approval. Digital services and streamlined procedures have positioned gold loans as a viable alternative alongside other credit options.
A rise in gold prices has also fueled this demand, as higher valuations allow borrowers to secure larger loan amounts against the same jewellery. However, the 70% surge in NBFC gold loans indicates that higher prices are only part of the driver, as new customers join the market while existing borrowers take higher loan amounts.
The market is expanding rapidly beyond major metropolitan areas into smaller towns, semi-urban centers, and rural regions where vast amounts of physical gold are held. Organised lenders, NBFCs, and fintech companies are offering formal credit alternatives to traditional informal debt. Estimates by ICRA show that the organised gold loan market reached approximately Rs 15 lakh crore in FY26.
Industry experts emphasize that the growth in gold loans does not merely signal economic distress. According to Pooja Abhishek Singh, increased digital convenience, improved access, and rising acceptance of formal credit structures are key catalysts.
Looking ahead, any potential drop or stabilization in gold prices could impact the loan amounts disbursed against jewellery. Nevertheless, experts project that expanding rural reach, financial inclusion, and phygital lending models will continue to drive the gold loan sector over the next 12 to 18 months.
