New Delhi: The central government has kicked off the process to choose the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). Current CJI Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai is set to retire on November 23, 2025, and the selection for his successor has begun a month in advance, as is the norm. Justice Surya Kant, the most senior Supreme Court judge after CJI Gavai, is likely to take over as the next CJI.

According to the rules laid out in official documents, the CJI post goes to the most senior Supreme Court judge deemed suitable for the role. The Union Law Minister typically asks the outgoing CJI for their recommendation on who should follow. Following this tradition, CJI Gavai has reportedly suggested Justice Surya Kant as his successor.
