Poisonous Plot: In a shocking case from Tamil Nadu that seems to prove the grim adage that “money is the root of all evil,” two sons have been accused of orchestrating their own father’s murder using a venomous snake to claim massive insurance payouts.
The incident occurred in Pothathurpetta village, Tiruvallur district. The victim, Ganesh, a lab assistant at a government institution, was found dead in his bed on October 22 with what appeared to be a snakebite on his neck. Initially ruled an accident, the case took a sinister turn when insurance companies flagged it as suspicious during their investigation.
This alert prompted police scrutiny, which quickly turned towards Ganesh’s two sons. Investigators made a startling discovery: Ganesh held a total of 11 life insurance policies worth a combined ₹3 crore.
Digging deeper, police unearthed a crucial detail. Just a week before his death, Ganesh had survived a snakebite. According to reports, police allege his sons had purchased a cobra from a man named Dhinkaran and used it to bite their father’s leg in that first, non-fatal attempt.
The second, fatal attack on October 22 involved an even deadlier snake. Call records and technical evidence reportedly show that the accused brought a highly venomous rattlesnake into the house that morning. Police allege that while Ganesh slept, the snake was released near him, biting his neck.
Tiruvallur SP Vivekananda Shukla stated, “The investigation revealed an unnecessary delay in taking the patient to the hospital. This is a crucial piece of evidence pointing to a premeditated conspiracy.”
Based on this evidence, police have arrested six people, including Ganesh’s two sons. They are accused of jointly arranging the snakes and executing the murder plot. A further investigation is currently underway.
