CHENNAI: Marking his formal entry into electoral politics, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and actor Vijay on Sunday announced that he will contest from two constituencies—Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) East—in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Addressing a meeting of party functionaries, the actor-turned-politician confirmed he would file his papers under his full name, C. Joseph Vijay, for both seats.

The announcement was accompanied by the release of the TVK’s candidate list, which features several members of the party’s core leadership. Senior figures including N. Anand, Adhav Arjuna, R. Arunraaj, C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar, and K. A. Sengkottaiyan have been fielded from prominent constituencies, including T. Nagar, Villivakkam, Gobichettipalayam, and Thirupparankundram. During the event, Vijay administered a pledge against corruption to his candidates, asserting that his representatives were handpicked based on their commitment to public service and personal trust.

Electoral Strategy and the Challenge to the Ruling Bloc
Vijay framed the 2026 assembly polls as a binary contest, positioning his “people’s alliance” as the primary challenger to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He characterized the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) as a “patch-up alliance” and stated that the election would essentially be a “two-sided fight” between his team and the front led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The TVK chief emphasized that the core objective of his party is to end what he described as the “autocracy” of the current administration.

The TVK’s campaign will lean heavily on youth-centric policies and anti-incumbency sentiments. By contesting from both a Chennai-based seat and a central Tamil Nadu constituency like Trichy East, Vijay appears to be signaling a strategic attempt to establish a footprint across different geographical belts of the state.

Manifesto Highlights and Election Schedule
As part of the party’s “guarantees” to the electorate, the TVK chief unveiled a manifesto focused on education, employment, and social welfare. Key promises include a collateral-free loan guarantee of up to ₹20 lakh for students ranging from Class 12 to Ph.D. levels, a commitment to making Tamil Nadu drug-free, and the implementation of transparent government recruitment processes. The party also pledged unemployment assistance, internships, and dedicated support for entrepreneurship to address the concerns of the state’s youth.

Tamil Nadu is scheduled to go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, with the counting of votes set for May 4. The current tenure of the 234-member state Assembly concludes on May 10. While the DMK-led SPA and the AIADMK-led NDA remain the established forces in the state’s political landscape, the TVK’s entry introduces a significant new variable into the 2026 electoral arithmetic.
