Bihar Legislative Council: PATNA – In a significant political development in Bihar, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from his membership of the Bihar Legislative Council on Monday. The move follows his recent victory in the Rajya Sabha elections held on March 16.
The Chief Minister submitted his formal resignation to the Chairman of the Bihar Legislative Council, Awadhesh Narain Singh, at approximately 10:00 AM on March 30, 2026. The Chairman has officially accepted the resignation. Under parliamentary regulations, a member elected to the Rajya Sabha must vacate their seat in the state legislature within 14 days of the election result.
Reports suggest that Nitish Kumar may step down from the post of Chief Minister after April 13. While speculation regarding his successor has intensified in political circles, no official statement has been issued by the Chief Minister’s Office or the ruling coalition regarding the transition of power.
Simultaneously, BJP National President Nitin Nabin has resigned from the Bihar Legislative Assembly. Nabin, who represented the Bankipur constituency in Patna, also secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha in the recent polls. Currently stationed in Assam for election campaigning, Nabin submitted his resignation through Bihar BJP State President Sanjay Sarawagi, who is scheduled to hand over the documents to Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar.
Nitin Nabin confirmed the development via a post on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging his transition to the upper house of Parliament. His resignation renders the Bankipur assembly seat vacant, necessitating a by-election in the coming months.
The timing of these resignations follows the conclusion of Nitish Kumar’s ‘Samriddhi Yatra,’ a statewide outreach program that ended in Patna on March 26. During the campaign, which spanned 32 public meetings across 32 districts, the Chief Minister remained tight-lipped about his parliamentary transition or his intentions regarding the Chief Minister’s post.
With the vacation of his seat in the Legislative Council, legal and constitutional protocols dictate that Nitish Kumar will eventually need to resign as Chief Minister before being sworn in as a Member of Parliament, marking a major shift in Bihar’s administrative leadership.
