Indian Railways Freight Record 2026: The Indian Railways has just wrapped up a powerhouse fiscal year, proving that the nation’s lifeline is moving faster and safer than ever before. In a year defined by massive infrastructure leaps and record-breaking hauls, the national transporter scaled new heights in the 2025-26 financial year by hauling a historic 1,670 million tonnes of freight.
This massive movement of coal, cement, and food grains has anchored the country’s supply chains, while the sarkar successfully managed the daily hustle of 25,000 trains to keep India on the move. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw pointed to these milestones on Saturday as a clear sign that the railways are no longer just about getting from point A to B, but are becoming a modern engine for the country’s economic growth.
Safety has taken center stage this year with the aggressive rollout of the indigenous Kavach system. This homegrown automatic train protection technology is now active across more than 3,100 route kilometers, with the ministry already working at a feverish pace to cover another 24,400 kilometers to prevent collisions.
Beyond the tracks, the manufacturing units have been buzzing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, churning out 1,674 locomotives and 6,677 high-tech LHB coaches. These efforts aren’t just numbers on a ledger; they represent a fundamental shift toward a more comfortable and secure journey for every passenger who boards a train.
The travel experience itself underwent a makeover this year with the introduction of the much-awaited Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. These new rakes, alongside the popular Amrit Bharat and semi-high-speed Vande Bharat fleet, are designed to make long-distance travel much smoother.
On the digital front, the launch of the RailOne App in July 2025 has finally brought booking and grievance redressal under one roof. To ensure the common man gets a fair shot at a seat, the railways also cracked down on digital middlemen by purging over 3.04 crore suspicious user accounts from their systems.
On the ground, the landscape of Indian stations is changing rapidly under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which saw 119 stations redeveloped with modern amenities this year. Logistics also got a boost with the commissioning of 35 Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, aimed at making freight movement more efficient.
Perhaps most significantly, the map of India is being redrawn as the Bairabi-Sairang line finally brought Aizawl onto the railway grid, while massive bridge projects have further secured all-weather connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir. From the Northeast hills to the valleys of the North, the railways are successfully stitching the country together through a mix of grit and high-tech yojanas.
