Shimla: The census process in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh is set to undergo a major transformation this year, with authorities introducing a completely digital system for the first time. Residents will now get an opportunity to enter their own and their family’s details through an online self-enumeration facility.
The government has launched the online system to make the census process more transparent and efficient. Officials say the move will help speed up data collection while also improving the accuracy of information.
According to the Directorate of Census Operations in Shimla, the self-enumeration facility will remain available from June 1 to June 15, 2026. During this period, people can visit the online portal at https://se.census.gov.in and submit details about themselves and their family members from home.
Officials stated that the entire process will operate through a secure digital system. They believe this will encourage greater public participation and make the census exercise more transparent.
After completing self-enumeration, every family will receive a unique 11-digit self-enumeration ID number. When census staff begin door-to-door surveys between June 16 and July 15, 2026, residents will need to show this ID number to the enumerators.
The information already submitted on the portal will then appear directly in the mobile application used by census workers, eliminating the need to fill in the details again.
Authorities believe the new arrangement will save time for both residents and census staff.
This time, census workers will not carry paper forms during field visits. Instead, they will use a dedicated mobile application to record information while visiting households.
Officials said the digital system will allow data to be uploaded online instantly, reducing the chances of human error. Data processing is also expected to become much faster compared to previous census exercises.
To monitor and manage the entire operation, authorities have developed the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal. The platform will help officials oversee training, resource management, and the overall progress of the census process.
