Himanta Biswa Sarma Slams Congress Over EVMs, Claims BJP Will Win Himachal Next Year

Shimla: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday launched a sharp political attack on the Congress party and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during a public rally in Shimla. Addressing a gathering during the Bharatiya Janata Party’s ‘Loktantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao’ padayatra, Sarma alleged that the Congress has been continuously targeting the country’s constitutional and democratic institutions.

Advising the Congress leadership, Sarma said that if the party possesses political courage, it should directly confront Prime Minister Narendra Modi instead of targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Taking a direct jab at Chief Minister Sukhu over the opposition’s protests against Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Sarma questioned how Sukhu occupies the Chief Minister’s post if EVMs are indeed tampered with.

Referring to the Congress party’s anti-EVM protests in Delhi, Sarma remarked that Sukhu is now questioning the very same electoral process and EVMs that brought him to power. He accused the Congress of disrespecting its own constitutional procedures.

“Today, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has gone to Delhi to protest against EVMs. You have gone to Delhi to abuse the very mother from whose womb you were born,” Sarma said. He added, “I repeat, Sukhu is abusing the very EVM through which he became the Chief Minister.”

BJP Will Form Government in Himachal Next Year: Himanta
Making a major prediction about Himachal Pradesh’s political future, the Assam Chief Minister said he had come from the sacred land of Kamakhya Devi to the land of Tara Devi, and that by this time next year, Himachal Pradesh will have a BJP Chief Minister. He appealed to the people of the state to oust the Sukhu-led government from power.

Sarma alleged that the Sukhu government has failed to deliver on its poll guarantees, including providing jobs to the youth and granting financial assistance of ₹1,500 per month to women.

‘Stop Claiming Vote Theft, Learn to Win Hearts’
Responding to allegations of vote theft made by the Congress, Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wins elections purely on the strength of development work. He advised the Congress to learn to win the hearts of the people instead of making baseless accusations.

Citing key decisions such as the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Sarma said the BJP earned the trust of citizens through its strong resolve. He questioned how Rahul Gandhi won his seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections if the fairness of the polls was in doubt, challenging him to resign from his post if he lacks faith in the electoral process.

Attack Over Allegations Against Poll Body and Judiciary
Sarma further accused the Congress of attempting to tarnish the credibility of independent institutions like the Election Commission and the judiciary. He remarked that power cannot be changed simply by gathering two to three thousand people in Delhi.

Dismissing the Congress’s allegations regarding SIR, Sarma asked how Congress and opposition parties managed to form governments in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana if voter list manipulation claims were true. He demanded that the Congress clarify which valid citizen’s name had been deleted from the electoral roll.

Calling backtracking on promises a form of great betrayal to the public, Sarma said the voters of Himachal should defeat Sukhu so decisively that his helicopter lands straight at Priyanka Gandhi’s residence. He quipped that Sukhu could easily find employment at Priyanka Gandhi’s house after losing power, reassuring Congress workers that removing a leadership that fails on its promises is necessary for the state’s welfare.
