Hamirpur: Netaji Subhash Chander Bose Memorial Government College in Hamirpur has secured the first overall rank among 142 government colleges in Himachal Pradesh. Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Shimla, stood second, while the Centre of Excellence, Sanjauli, secured the third position. The achievement has encouraged the college faculty to maintain the top position and motivated students to perform better in the coming years.

Hamirpur College Tops Category A

The Directorate of Higher Education introduced the State Ranking of Government Colleges of Himachal Pradesh in the 2023-24 academic session. Hamirpur college secured the first position in the overall category during the second-year assessment. The directorate divided government colleges into three categories based on student strength and the range of courses offered.

Category A included colleges with more than 1,000 students offering all streams. Category B covered colleges with fewer than 500 students offering all streams, while Category C included institutions with fewer than 500 students offering a limited range of streams. Hamirpur college secured the first rank in Category A and also topped the overall rankings across all three categories.

Principal Credits Faculty, Staff and Students

College Principal Sangeeta Singh said the achievement had brought recognition to the institution while increasing the responsibility of its faculty members, ministerial staff and students.

She said the directorate assessed colleges on several parameters, including academic performance, sports, cultural activities, research and analysis by teachers and students, faculty profiles, institutional management and administration.

Singh credited former teachers and principals for building a culture of discipline and ensuring the judicious use of funds for institutional development. She said the college had secured top positions in several assessment criteria, particularly infrastructure for academic and sports activities.

College Established in 1965

Government Degree College, Hamirpur, was established in 1965. It gradually developed into one of the leading higher education institutions in Himachal Pradesh, with the aim of shaping students into aware, responsible and accountable citizens.

The institution was renamed Netaji Subhash Chander Bose Memorial Government College in 1995. It is covered under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Last year, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) re-accredited the college with a B grade and a score of 2.83 points.

The college offers undergraduate programmes in science, including medical, non-medical and computer science, as well as humanities and commerce. Its postgraduate courses include Hindi, commerce, English and economics.

It also offers self-financing courses such as Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) and Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). Additional courses are available in tourism and travel management, journalism and computer applications. Spread across 22 acres, the campus has playgrounds for major outdoor sports, indoor sports facilities, a gymnasium and four badminton courts.

The college stadium features a 400-metre synthetic track and a modern indoor stadium. The institution also has 11 residential quarters for staff and separate boys’ and girls’ hostels, each with a capacity of 100 students. The college has National Service Scheme (NSS), National Cadet Corps (NCC), Rovers and Rangers, and Rotaract units to engage students in various activities.

Digital Infrastructure and New Testing Centre

The college’s departments are connected through VPN broadband and leased-line facilities. Its library uses the SOUL Library Management Software developed by INFLIBNET. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently inaugurated a new computer-based testing centre at the college, adding another facility to the institution. Singh also said Hamirpur district’s position as the district with the highest literacy rate in the state had contributed to the college’s ranking.
