Kasauli Heritage Market Fire: A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Monday in the historic Heritage Market of Kasauli’s Cantonment area, reducing a significant part of the 184-year-old landmark to ashes. The inferno has caused widespread destruction at one of Himachal Pradesh’s most popular tourist destinations.
The fire reportedly started around 4:00 AM. Witnesses stated that the flames spread with such velocity that shopkeepers had no time to salvage their belongings. The situation escalated rapidly as gas cylinders stored in various eateries began to explode.
The force of these blasts was so intense that iron roofing sheets and debris were launched nearly 200 meters away, landing atop nearby trees. Out of the 29 shops in the Heritage Market, eight have been completely incinerated, while several others sustained heavy damage.

The administration’s preliminary estimates suggest a financial loss ranging between 5 crore and 7 crore. For the local community, however, the loss is more than monetary. The market, established by the British in 1842, represented the soul of Kasauli’s tourism.
This tragedy follows the earlier removal of the Pine Mall Market due to court orders, which had already displaced several families. With the Heritage Market now largely destroyed, residents fear an irreparable blow to the town’s aesthetic charm and local economy.

The firefighting operation saw a coordinated effort between the Himachal Pradesh Fire Department, the Indian Army, and the Air Force. It took approximately 11 hours of intensive labor to bring the flames under control.
Serious questions have been raised regarding the emergency response infrastructure. Reports indicate that fire hydrants installed at the site failed to function when they were needed most, drawing criticism from the local business community.
Local MLA Vinod Sultanpuri and Former Minister Rajiv Saizal visited the site to assess the damage. They met with the affected families and offered condolences. While the administration has distributed immediate relief funds to the victims, a detailed investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
