Assam: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a sharp attack on the Assam government on Saturday , accusing it of rampant corruption and running the state through “mafia and syndicate rule.”
Speaking at a public rally in Nazira on January 31, she said the people of Assam had grown weary of the current administration and were eager for a change. Addressing reporters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, Gandhi Vadra declared that voters wanted the state to reclaim its former glory under a new government committed solely to public service.
“This is a corrupt Govt. People can see how everything is being done through threats. There is mafia rule, syndicate rule. I think people are tired…They want the same Assam to rise, which once existed. They want a new government that would only work towards serving people. People know that our leader is honest and they want to bring him forward,” she said.
Gandhi Vadra also hit back at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after he accused the Congress of politicising the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg. She rejected the charge outright and defended her party’s stand on delivering justice.
“I honestly don’t believe that such things should be politicised. I don’t think so but I think that when there is a demand among the public that somebody who they revered and respected is not getting justice, then – as politicians – isn’t it our duty to say that yes, we are going to make every effort to give justice? How is that politicisation?” she asked.
Earlier in the day, the Congress leader had promised swift action on the Zubeen Garg case if her party came to power. “The Congress government wants Zubeen Garg ji to get justice. Within 100 days, as soon as our government is formed, we will get him justice,” she said.
She also announced plans to convert temporary land deeds given to local ‘Bhumiputras’ into permanent ones, promising to benefit 10 lakh sons of the soil.
Gandhi Vadra’s remarks come as political temperatures rise in Assam with the Assembly elections drawing closer. Polling for all 126 constituencies is set for April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4.
The BJP-led NDA alliance, which includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), is seeking a third straight term in power. The Congress, meanwhile, is mounting a strong challenge to dislodge the incumbent government.
