Weather Update: According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense to very dense fog is likely to prevail over several parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha over the next five to seven days. The foggy conditions may significantly affect visibility, especially during night and early morning hours.
In addition, over the next three to four days, isolated places in Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan are also expected to experience dense to very dense fog during nighttime and morning hours.
Cold Day Conditions Expected in Several States
The IMD has also warned of “cold day” conditions in parts of northern India. On January 2, cold day conditions are likely at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi may also experience cold day conditions on January 2. Furthermore, there is a strong possibility of cold day conditions in Bihar on January 2 and 3.
Fresh Snowfall Welcomes the New Year in Kashmir
The New Year began in the Kashmir Valley with fresh snowfall in tourist destinations and higher reaches, offering a picturesque start to 2026. According to the Meteorological Department, as the impact of the current western disturbance weakens, light rain or snowfall may occur in some areas, with weather conditions gradually improving by evening. Another brief spell of light rain or snowfall at isolated places is also possible on Friday.
Bitter Cold in Delhi
Delhi welcomed the New Year with cold and cloudy conditions on Thursday. The minimum temperature was recorded at 10.6 degrees Celsius, and the IMD has forecast light rain during the day. With minimum temperatures expected to drop further, cold conditions may intensify from January 3 onwards. The IMD has indicated that cold winds from the Himalayan region are likely to move towards the national capital, adding to the chill.
Rainy Start to the New Year in Mumbai
Mumbai experienced a rainy start to the New Year as several parts of the city received rainfall early Thursday morning. The rain began before 6 am, with some areas witnessing heavy showers while others experienced light drizzles. The pleasant weather brought a refreshing start to the year for Mumbaikars.
