New Delhi: A 30-year-old judge from Rajasthan’s Alwar district, Aman Kumar Sharma, died by suicide at his Delhi residence on May 2. The incident has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity and his hometown, raising distressing questions about the personal struggles the young officer faced. His father, a senior advocate, was reportedly present at the residence during the heated altercation that preceded the tragedy.

Aman Sharma was the eldest son of Prem Prakash Sharma, a prominent Alwar-based advocate. Known for his calm demeanour and academic brilliance, he cleared the judicial services examination in 2021, a feat that filled his family with immense pride. His father had long cherished the dream of arranging his son’s marriage with the daughter of a close friend.

However, during his judicial exam preparations, Aman developed a relationship with a batchmate. When he disclosed this to his father, Prem Prakash Sharma prioritised his son’s happiness and the family consented to a love marriage as per Hindu rituals. Over time, however, tensions began to surface in the marital relationship. The family has specifically alleged that the judge’s sister-in-law, an IAS officer posted in Jammu, played a significant role in escalating the domestic disputes.

Despite frequent visits to his hometown, Aman remained deeply reserved and never openly discussed the turmoil in his married life. Two days before the incident, Aman made a final, desperate call to his father, stating he could no longer cope with his life. Prem Prakash Sharma immediately rushed to Delhi, hoping to resolve the conflict upon arrival. According to the family’s account, the situation turned ugly when the father witnessed his son being engaged in a bitter argument. The family alleges that Aman’s father was insulted in front of him, a humiliation they believe the young judge could not bear.

On the afternoon of May 2, after a loud altercation inside the room, Aman Sharma hanged himself using a stole. His father was right outside the door. The body was brought to Alwar on Sunday, and the last rites were performed at the Teej cremation ground with full state honours amidst a large gathering. Notably, no member from his wife’s family attended the funeral. The bereaved family has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation, asserting that this is not a simple case of suicide but a serious matter requiring strict legal action against those culpable.
