Himachal Municipal Election 2026: The political atmosphere in Himachal Pradesh has heated up ahead of the upcoming municipal corporation elections, with the ruling Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party locked in a high-stakes contest across key urban regions. The elections in Mandi, Solan, Dharamshala, and Palampur are now being viewed as an important political battle for Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the Congress leadership.
Congress has launched an aggressive campaign to challenge the BJP’s dominance, especially in Mandi, which has traditionally been considered a stronghold of the saffron party. Chief Minister Sukhu, along with Himachal Congress in-charge Rajni Patil, has personally taken charge of the campaign, making the election battle more intense.
The Congress party has focused heavily on its “Mission Mandi” strategy. Sukhu has been holding public meetings across various wards, highlighting the state government’s welfare schemes and achievements before voters. At the same time, Rajni Patil has been working at the grassroots level to energise party workers and manage local political equations.
Party leaders believe that a victory in Mandi could send a strong political message across Himachal Pradesh. In the previous municipal corporation election, BJP had secured a major victory by winning 11 out of 15 seats in the civic body.
Senior Congress leaders have also intensified their presence on the ground. Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh campaigned in Mandi along with veteran leader Kaul Singh Thakur. Both leaders conducted door-to-door campaigns and questioned BJP’s development claims in the region.
Vikramaditya Singh stated during the campaign that Mandi’s real development could only take place under the Congress government. Political observers within the party believe that the combination of Kaul Singh Thakur’s experience and Vikramaditya Singh’s youth appeal has boosted the morale of Congress workers in the region.
Apart from Mandi, Congress has deployed several ministers and senior leaders in Solan, Dharamshala, and Palampur to strengthen its campaign. Rural Development Minister Anirudh Singh, Industries Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, Health Minister Dhani Ram Shandil, Education Minister Rohit Thakur, and Himachal Congress president Vinay Kumar are actively participating in the election campaign.
Congress legislators and senior office-bearers from across the state have camped in the four major municipal corporations. Leaders have been assigned ward-wise responsibilities, while candidates are focusing on local civic issues along with promoting government welfare schemes among voters.
Meanwhile, rebel candidates have emerged as a major concern for both Congress and BJP. Across the four municipal corporations, a total of 16 rebel candidates from both parties are contesting the elections independently. Among them, 10 are linked to BJP and 6 to Congress.
In Solan Municipal Corporation, both BJP and Congress have two rebel candidates each. Dharamshala has two BJP rebels in the fray. In Mandi, out of 14 independent candidates, six are considered BJP rebels while four are linked to Congress.
The elections are also witnessing strong participation from women and middle-class urban families. According to available figures, 42 candidates are contesting in Solan, 34 in Palampur, and 54 in Dharamshala. In Mandi, BJP and Congress together have fielded 28 candidates, although candidates from both major parties withdrew nominations in Ward Number 14.
Himachal Pradesh is set to hold elections in 51 urban local bodies, including four municipal corporations, 25 municipal councils, and 22 nagar panchayats. Voting will take place on May 17 from 7 am to 3 pm. Counting for municipal councils and nagar panchayats will be completed on the same day, while results for municipal corporations will be declared on May 31.
The elections are being seen as a significant political test for the Sukhu government, which came to power in December 2022. While Congress managed to protect its position during by-elections, the party suffered a setback in the Lok Sabha elections, where BJP won all parliamentary seats in the state.
According to the State Election Commissioner, 1,80,963 male voters and 1,79,882 female voters are eligible to vote in this election. A total of 1,808 voters will cast their vote for the first time.
