Himachal News: A serious breach of jail security occurred on May 16 inside the sub-jail at Kishanpura in Nalagarh, Solan district of Himachal Pradesh. Five inmates allegedly attacked a warder on duty, leaving him with serious injuries on his head and back. When a havildar rushed to rescue the warder, he too was assaulted by the same group of prisoners.
According to the complaint filed by the injured warder Rohit Kumar, son of Hansraj and resident of Thachi village in Mandi district, the attack took place while he was performing his regular supervisory duty inside the jail premises. The five prisoners acted together and suddenly pounced on him.
The accused prisoners have been identified as Suryatej son of Ishwar, Deepak son of Dilbag, Sunil son of Surendra, Gurcharan son of Kamal, and Gagan son of Vinod. All five are lodged in the same barrack of the sub-jail.
The complaint further states that when Havildar Nand Lal reached the spot to intervene and save Warder Rohit Kumar, the inmates did not spare him either. They beat him brutally, causing injuries on his body. The simultaneous assault on two security personnel inside the jail created an atmosphere of chaos and tension within the premises for some time.
Other jail staff on duty acted swiftly after noticing the commotion and raised voices from the barrack. They reached the spot, controlled the aggressive inmates, and brought the situation under control. Immediate first aid was provided to both injured personnel.
The warder’s complaint also mentions that the five inmates not only obstructed a government servant in the discharge of his official duties but also threatened to kill the staff on duty. The administration has taken the death threat issued openly inside the jail very seriously.
Police from Manpura police station promptly registered a case against the five accused prisoners under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prisons Act. Officials said that a thorough investigation into all aspects of the incident is underway and further legal action will be taken accordingly.
This incident of inmates attacking jail staff on duty has once again highlighted challenges related to maintaining law and order inside correctional facilities. The swift response by other staff prevented the situation from escalating further.
Local police are now focusing on collecting evidence and statements related to the coordinated nature of the attack. Authorities have assured that the safety and security protocols inside the sub-jail will be reviewed in the light of this event.
The injured warder and havildar are stated to have received necessary medical attention following the assault. No further details on the condition of the injured personnel or the specific reasons behind the inmates’ sudden aggression were available immediately.
