Tata Motors recorded a stellar performance in the Indian passenger vehicle market in May 2026, outpacing Mahindra & Mahindra in total sales while charting a historic milestone in the electric vehicle (EV) segment. The achievement comes on the back of sustained demand across the company’s SUV and EV portfolios.
During the month, Tata Motors registered a total sales volume of 59,790 passenger vehicles across domestic and export markets. This includes 59,090 units sold within India and 700 units sent for exports, marking a significant 42 percent growth compared to the corresponding period last year.
In comparison, Mahindra & Mahindra reported domestic sales of 58,021 SUVs in May 2026, with its total cumulative sales, including exports, reaching 59,573 units. Backed by its strong product lineup, Tata Motors managed to edge past Mahindra in total sales by a narrow margin.
The primary driver behind Tata Motors’ record-breaking month was its electric vehicle division. The carmaker dispatched a total of 10,517 electric vehicles in May 2026, registering a massive 85 percent year-on-year growth compared to the 5,685 units sold in May 2025. This marks the highest-ever single-month EV sales figure in the company’s history.
Popular models like the Punch EV, Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Curvv EV continued to witness strong consumer traction across various segments, accelerating the brand’s electric mobility business.
Retail demand remained equally robust throughout May. According to Tata Motors, the company registered a year-on-year growth of over 50 percent in VAHAN registrations, indicating efficient vehicle deliveries and steady consumer interest on the ground.
Tata Motors continues to command the domestic electric passenger vehicle industry. According to data from Auto Punditz for April 2026, Tata Motors led the EV market with a 39.5 percent market share, selling 9,041 units. Mahindra held the second position with 6,386 units (27.9 percent market share), followed by MG Motor India in third place with 4,614 units (20.2 percent market share).
