Bilaspur: Doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bilaspur have achieved a milestone in Himachal Pradesh’s healthcare sector by successfully performing a complex microsurgery to reattach a patient’s near-completely severed hand.
The rare medical procedure, identified as the state’s first successful hand revascularization case, saved both the patient’s limb and its functional capabilities. The patient had arrived at the hospital in a critical condition with the hand almost entirely separated from the body. Recognizing the urgency, the medical team immediately prepared for an emergency operation.
Led by senior doctor Dr. Navneet Sharma, a highly trained team of surgeons and medical staff performed the marathon seven-hour surgery using advanced microsurgical techniques. The surgical team meticulously reconnected the delicate nerves, blood vessels, arteries, and fractured bones. Restoring blood circulation to the severed limb proved to be the most challenging phase of the operation.
This marks the first time a microsurgery of this complexity has been executed at AIIMS Bilaspur. Following the successful procedure, the patient was kept under close observation in intensive care. After showing rapid recovery under continuous medical supervision, the patient was safely discharged 10 days post-surgery.
Medical professionals view this achievement as a major milestone for Himachal Pradesh. The availability of such advanced emergency microsurgery facilities at AIIMS Bilaspur ensures that residents will no longer need to travel outside the state for complex critical procedures.
