Google Chrome on Android: Opening multiple tabs, copying information, and switching between apps while browsing the internet on a smartphone may soon become a thing of the past. Google is bringing its Gemini AI assistant to the Android version of Chrome, allowing users to understand webpage content, ask context-based questions, and perform various tasks directly within the page they are viewing.
The feature is currently being rolled out for Android users in the US. Prior to this, Gemini in Chrome was only available on desktop devices.
With Gemini integrated into Chrome, users can quickly generate short summaries of long articles. The AI can highlight key points, answer specific questions about the content on a page, and help users locate specific details without going through the entire text.
Additionally, Gemini works alongside other Google applications like Google Calendar and Google Keep, reducing the need to switch between different apps frequently.
Gemini also includes an ‘Auto Browse’ capability, allowing it to execute multi-step web tasks rather than just answering questions. It can assist users in comparing products, finding deals, making restaurant reservations, scheduling appointments, and managing travel bookings. This capability is currently available in the US for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers.
To address security concerns surrounding AI operating on websites, Google has implemented safeguards within the Auto Browse feature to protect against prompt injection attacks. If a website contains hidden instructions intended to manipulate the AI, Gemini uses its safety systems to handle the threat. The assistant will also seek user confirmation before executing any sensitive actions.
While Gemini in Chrome desktop is already available in India with support for Hindi and several other regional languages, the Android integration has not yet been rolled out in the country. Indian mobile users will need to wait for Google to expand the service beyond the US.
