Shimla: Electric vehicles are gaining steady popularity across Himachal Pradesh as rising petrol and diesel prices force commuters to seek cost-effective alternatives. Low running costs alongside government incentives have encouraged buyers to make the shift toward cleaner mobility.
Over the last three years, the state registered 6,248 electric vehicles. This includes 2,829 two-wheelers, 1,528 motorcars, and 252 passenger three-wheelers.
During the same three-year period, a total of 4,91,285 new vehicles were registered across the state. Although EVs still account for a small fraction of overall vehicle registrations, the consistent rise in numbers points toward a shifting consumer preference.
To boost adoption, the state government offers a 100 percent exemption on registration fees, permit fees, and token taxes for electric vehicles. Buyers also receive a 50 percent concession on special road tax. These financial reliefs significantly lower both the initial purchase cost and overall operational expenses.
To support the growing fleet, authorities are actively expanding the state’s charging infrastructure by installing EV charging stations across key locations.
The growth in EV adoption comes at a time when vehicle density in Himachal Pradesh is rising sharply. Total registered vehicles in the state grew from 12,37,128 in 2016 to 21,06,438 in 2022, touching approximately 25 lakh by 2026.
With the road network expanding to nearly 43,000 kilometers and connecting 3,644 villages, vehicle ownership has surged. In this scenario, the growing trend toward electric mobility serves as a vital alternative to curb emissions and ease environmental pressure.
