Thiruvananthapuram: Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill produced a commanding batting display as India chased down a target of 295 to win by eight wickets, with 8.2 overs remaining. Kohli remained unbeaten on 139, while Gill scored 110 as the two batters shared a 151-run partnership that turned the chase into a comfortable contest.
The defining moment came when Kohli reached his 55th century. He stepped down the ground and struck Gudakesh Motie over long-on for a six, sending the crowd into celebration.
Kohli’s innings was marked by aggressive strokeplay, while Gill’s century underlined his ability to control a chase. Apart from being dropped on 11, Gill remained largely untroubled during his innings.
Gill began cautiously before shifting gears in the eighth over against Matthew Forde. He struck three boundaries against the bowler, moving rapidly from 18 off 26 balls to 39 off 33.
His strokeplay continued against both spin and pace. He regularly used his feet and adjusted his shots according to the bowlers’ changes in length. An inside-out six off Motie and a cut for four were among the shots that stood out.
Gill eventually brought up his century, but cramps forced him to leave the partnership before Kohli completed the chase. Kohli continued in his aggressive style and reached his century with a six off Motie.
The partnership also highlighted the different stages of the two batters’ careers. Kohli, with 55 centuries and more than 15,000 runs, remains one of India’s most accomplished batters, while Gill represents the present and future of the team’s batting.
There was also an emotional moment after Gill’s century. As he returned to the pavilion, Kohli ran towards him, hugged him and put an arm around his shoulder.
Gill’s innings also addressed questions surrounding his record while chasing. Before this match, he averaged 59 in successful pursuits but had only two centuries from nine such innings.
Together, Kohli and Gill guided India through the chase with control and aggression, completing an eight-wicket victory on the Greenfield surface.
