Bilaspur: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bilaspur is gearing up to introduce cutting-edge CAR-T cell therapy for cancer treatment over the next one to two years. Under this advanced immunotherapy technique, a patient’s own T-cells are extracted, genetically modified in a laboratory to recognize and attack cancer cells, and then reinfused into the body to fight the disease.
Alongside the revolutionary cancer treatment, the premier medical institute is preparing to establish dedicated bone marrow and liver transplant facilities. AIIMS Bilaspur, which has already initiated robot-assisted orthopedic surgeries, is working to expand its robotic surgery capabilities further to handle complex surgical procedures with greater precision using modern technology.
As part of its major infrastructure expansion, AIIMS Bilaspur will develop the state’s largest state-of-the-art Mother and Child Health Center. This facility will not be limited to local patients from Bilaspur but will serve as a statewide referral, guidance, and coordination hub across Himachal Pradesh. An advanced telecare network will also be set up alongside the center to connect patients in remote corners of the hill state with specialist doctors.
Lab Expansion and One Health Research Focus
To improve critical care management, AIIMS Bilaspur will strengthen system pathways for local hospitals to refer severe cases and receive specialized guidance. The institute will also expand its Central Research Laboratory by building a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) facility. This secure lab environment will allow researchers to safely study high-consequence infectious bacteria and viruses. Additionally, an Animal BSL-3 unit will be constructed to support scientific studies on diseases and therapeutic interventions.
The institute will place special emphasis on research tailored to Himachal Pradesh’s regional health requirements. Medical experts across various disciplines will collaborate on complex disease studies while adopting a integrated approach that considers human, animal, and environmental health together, alongside a focus on developing indigenous medical technologies.
Academic Partnerships with IIT Mandi and IIM Sirmaur
Undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at AIIMS Bilaspur will be aligned with local health priorities. Through PhD programs, the institution aims to train clinician-researchers who can actively treat patients while conducting medical research. To foster medical innovation, training, and healthcare startups, AIIMS Bilaspur is partnering with leading institutions, including IIT Mandi and IIM Sirmaur.
Speaking to the media, Dr. N.K. Arora, President of AIIMS Bilaspur, stated that the institute was envisioned as an institution of national importance. He highlighted that over the next two years, the target is to establish capabilities in bone marrow transplants, liver transplants, CAR-T therapy, precision medicine, diagnostic-driven treatments, and advanced robotic surgeries, while the upcoming mother and child health facility acts as a central guidance hub for all of Himachal Pradesh.
