SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta has announced a series of strict austerity measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and promoting self-reliance. Responding to the ongoing West Asia crisis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for national fuel conservation, the Governor has designated Lok Bhavan as a “Fuel Conservation Zone.”
In a major step towards administrative discipline, Governor Gupta has directed that his official convoy be reduced by half. Currently, the Governor’s motorcade consists of nearly 10 vehicles. This reduction is intended to set a personal example for public officials and citizens regarding the responsible use of state resources during a period of global economic volatility.
Ban on Official Helicopter Use
The Governor further declared that he will not use the state government’s helicopter for any official engagements until the West Asia crisis subsides and global fuel prices stabilize. He noted that when the nation is being urged to save every drop of fuel, it is inappropriate for high-ranking officials to utilize the most fuel-intensive modes of transport.
To further minimize road travel, Governor Gupta has instructed that all non-essential meetings be conducted via video conferencing. Official events will also be consolidated and rescheduled to ensure that vehicle movement is kept to an absolute minimum.
Introduction of ‘Petrol-Free Sundays’
A unique initiative titled “Petrol-Free Sunday” will now be observed at Lok Bhavan. Under this policy, no official vehicle using imported fuel will be operated on Sundays. The Governor has opted for a “work from home” approach for the staff on these days, with all urgent coordination occurring through digital platforms.
The Governor also shared that he plans to lead by example by occasionally using public transport or electric vehicles for his commute. He has formally written to the state government, suggesting that similar standard operating procedures (SOPs) be framed for other departments to reduce public expenditure.
Call to Universities and Youth
As the Chancellor of all state universities in Himachal Pradesh, Governor Gupta has urged Vice-Chancellors to institutionalize energy conservation on campuses. He has requested the academic community-including students, teachers, and staff-to adopt carpooling, cycling, and public transport for their daily travel.
Addressing the youth, the Governor emphasized their role as “ambassadors of conservation.” He called upon the people of the state to embrace the “Vocal for Local” campaign, prioritize local handicrafts, and choose domestic tourism over foreign travel to strengthen the national economy.
