Kangra Police Freeze Assets Worth ₹95.67 Lakh of Notorious Drug Smuggler

KANGRA: Continuing its crackdown on the financial empire of drug smugglers, Kangra Police have executed another major “surgical strike” by freezing properties worth ₹95.67 lakh belonging to notorious smuggler Gaurav Kumar, a resident of Jawali.

The case dates back to October 3, 2025, when a special investigation team (SIT) of Kangra district police conducted a raid based on a tip-off and recovered 1.006 kg of charas from the possession of Gaurav Kumar and his associates. Following the recovery, a case was registered under the NDPS Act at Nagrota Bagwan police station and the accused were sent to jail.

After the arrest, police initiated a financial investigation to trace the roots of the illegal trade. The probe revealed that Gaurav Kumar, his father Vijay Kumar, and his brother-in-law Dhundhi had accumulated crores of rupees through drug smuggling and used the money to build properties.

The investigation team documented illegal properties worth a total of ₹95,67,741 registered in the names of the three accused. Following this, the Nagrota Bagwan police station in-charge issued orders on April 22, 2026, to freeze these properties, which received final approval from the competent authority in Delhi on May 22, 2026.

Properties frozen include:

  • Two residential houses
  • Two plots of land
  • One Mahindra vehicle and one Swift Desire car

The accused cannot sell or transfer these assets without written permission.

Notably, earlier police had similarly frozen assets worth ₹96,77,350 belonging to female drug smuggler Sonia Rana of Baijnath. With both actions combined, Kangra Police have now frozen illegal assets totalling ₹1,92,45,091.

Police officials have issued a clear warning that the strict campaign against the illegal empire of drug smugglers will continue with the same vigour in the future. Police have also appealed to the public to support the force against drug abuse that is hollowing out society, and to immediately report any suspicious or illegal activity to the local police. The identity of informants will be kept fully confidential.
