NEW DELHI: A day after the capital witnessed police detaining protesters and deploying heavy security, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi urged youth, opposition parties, and civil society groups to unite and march to the Supreme Court on Monday.Calling on citizens to shed fear with his slogan “Daro mat,” Gandhi announced in a post on X that demonstrators would walk together with “love, brotherhood, and patriotism”.
He stated that the march would unite citizens across party lines, gender, caste, community, and state boundaries. According to Gandhi, youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, and individuals who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India will participate in the demonstration.
During the march, a memorandum will be submitted to Chief Justice Surya Kant on behalf of the nation. The demands outline an immediate end to alleged “vote chori,” a halt to the SIR (Special Intensive Revision), and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Reiterating his opposition, Gandhi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, NSA Ajit Doval, and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat cannot silence the voice of the nation. Calling them “cowards” who cannot intimidate the public, he added that they would have to step aside.
Sharply criticizing Saturday’s action against demonstrators in Delhi, the Congress leader pointed out that young people had gathered peacefully without hatred or anger. He alleged that the youth were beaten by both police personnel and BJP goons, emphasizing that this is not the vision for India.
Background and Legal Action on Protesters
The call for the Supreme Court march comes in the backdrop of widespread detentions in Delhi on Saturday during the CJP-led protest. High-profile activists, including CJP members Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das, were detained and subsequently produced before the Executive Magistrate at the Delhi Cantt Police Station.
CJP Legal Affairs Head Ratna Singh confirmed via social media that the activists were released under the condition of maintaining peace for one year. However, activist Abhijeet Dipke publicly stated that he had not signed any bond and remained undeterred by the threat of police action or detention, daring authorities to jail him repeatedly.
