India and Ecuador are exploring the possibility of firming up a preferential trade pact while agreeing to expand bilateral cooperation in healthcare, agriculture, and digital technology. The discussions were the focus of talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Ecuadorian counterpart Gabriela Sommerfeld Rosero in New Delhi this week.
The two-day official visit of the Ecuadorian delegation marked a new chapter in strengthening diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations. During the talks on April 29, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in multiple areas, including trade, pharmaceuticals, capacity building, and digital infrastructure.
Foreign Minister Sommerfeld formally handed over letters marking Ecuador’s decision to join the International Solar Alliance and the International Big Cat Alliance. Additionally, both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding for ‘Quick Impact Projects’. Under this agreement, India will provide grant assistance worth up to ₹12 crore over five years for socio-economic development projects in Ecuador.
During meetings with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, the leaders discussed a roadmap for a Preferential Trade Agreement. The deliberations also focused on increasing Indian pharmaceutical exports to Ecuador and forming supply chain partnerships for critical minerals such as copper and gold.
Furthermore, Sommerfeld met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda to discuss bilateral health cooperation. The two sides focused on affordable healthcare solutions and technical mechanisms, including the recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia by Ecuador.
