Vikramaditya Vedic Clock: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently paid a visit to the historic Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi. Amidst the resonance of Vedic chants, he performed a special puja in the gold-plated sanctum. Following his prayers, the Prime Minister took a keen interest in the newly installed ‘Vikramaditya Vedic Clock,’ observing its unique features.
This clock, a testament to the blend of tradition and technology, was presented by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav to Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath earlier this month. It was subsequently installed within the temple premises on April 4, 2026.
Developed by the Maharaja Vikramaditya Shodh Peeth in Ujjain, the device is the first of its kind to integrate Indian timekeeping with digital accuracy. Unlike standard clocks, it operates based on sunrise, providing data on the Vikram Samvat calendar, planetary movements, lunar phases, and the 30 daily ‘muhurats.’
Dr. Shriram Tiwari, the culture advisor to the MP Chief Minister, explained that the clock serves as a vital tool for understanding ancient astronomical science. It displays both Indian Standard Time (IST) and Vedic time, ensuring that the younger generation remains connected to India’s rich scientific and cultural legacy.
The government now aims to expand this initiative by installing similar Vedic clocks at other major religious sites, including the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. By placing these clocks at all Jyotirlingas, authorities hope to reinforce the scientific rigor inherent in Indian traditions while promoting a deeper appreciation for the nation’s historical wisdom.
