Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader V.D. Satheesan was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Kerala on Monday, bringing the United Democratic Front back to power after a decisive victory in the assembly elections.

The ceremony at Central Stadium drew large crowds and top national leaders. State Governor administered the oath of office and secrecy to Satheesan at around 10 am. In a rare moment in Kerala’s political history, the entire 20-member cabinet took oath together with him on the same stage. Officials noted that such a collective swearing-in by a Chief Minister and full cabinet had not happened in nearly six decades.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and chief ministers of other Congress-ruled states attended the event, reflecting the importance the party attached to the occasion.

Satheesan, 61, rose through student politics and built a strong base in his home turf. Born on May 31, 1964, in a Nayar family in Nettur near Kochi, he studied at local schools before earning degrees in social work and law. He practised at the Kerala High Court for about a decade while staying active in politics.

His journey began with the Kerala Students Union. He later served as national secretary of the National Students Union of India. After losing his first assembly election from Paravur in 1996, he won the seat in 2001 and has held it continuously since then, turning it into a Congress stronghold. In the recent polls, he defeated his nearest rival by over 20,600 votes.

Party leaders credit his organisational skills, sharp oratory and deep understanding of ground issues for the UDF’s impressive performance. Under his leadership as campaign in-charge, the front secured 102 seats. He had earlier served as chief whip in the previous UDF government and as Leader of Opposition in the last assembly.

For readers in Himachal and other northern states, the development is being watched for its possible signals on Congress strategy ahead of future elections. The smooth transition and presence of top leaders suggest the party is trying to project unity after a period of internal adjustments in Kerala.

The new Chief Minister is expected to focus on governance issues that matter to ordinary citizens — from better public services to handling economic challenges in a state known for high literacy and remittances. His background as a lawyer and mass leader is seen as an asset in balancing administrative demands with political management.

Monday’s event also stood out for its scale. Thousands gathered at the stadium to witness the swearing-in, turning it into a public celebration for UDF supporters. Security arrangements were tight but the atmosphere remained festive.

Political observers point out that Satheesan’s elevation comes after careful consideration by the Congress high command. His selection as legislature party leader ten days ago paved the way for this formal appointment. With a clear majority, the new government is likely to begin work on immediate priorities without the usual delays of coalition bargaining.

As Kerala enters this new phase, much will depend on how the Satheesan administration handles day-to-day governance and maintains the delicate balance within the UDF alliance. For now, the focus remains on the strong mandate and the symbolic unity shown during the swearing-in.
