West Bengal Elections: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged widespread irregularities, including ballot tampering, during the recently concluded assembly elections in West Bengal. Party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally visited strongrooms in Kolkata to inspect the security arrangements for the EVMs and VVPATs. She expressed concern over possible manipulation of votes and urged strict vigilance during the counting process.
The allegations surfaced prominently after the final phase of polling, with TMC leaders claiming that certain polling booths witnessed suspicious activities. The party demanded a thorough investigation into these claims to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
The BJP has strongly rejected the TMC’s allegations, terming them an attempt to discredit the election process after unfavourable exit polls. BJP leaders accused the TMC of resorting to such claims as a face-saving measure. The party also pointed to instances where it alleged that its symbol was allegedly taped over on EVMs in certain booths, particularly in the Diamond Harbour area, though those claims were separately addressed by the Election Commission.
The Election Commission of India has categorically dismissed the TMC’s allegations of large-scale tampering. Officials stated that all necessary safeguards were in place and that any specific complaints would be examined as per established protocols. The Commission has maintained that the polling was conducted smoothly in most areas despite isolated incidents of tension.
The controversy has added to the already charged political atmosphere in West Bengal ahead of the results. Both TMC and BJP have traded sharp accusations, with each side accusing the other of attempting to influence the electoral outcome through unfair means. Voter turnout in the final phase was reported to be substantial, reflecting high public interest in the keenly contested elections. Security forces were deployed in strength to maintain law and order during polling.
As counting day approaches, all parties have intensified their monitoring of the strongrooms. Political observers say the coming days will be crucial in determining not just the winner but also the credibility of the electoral exercise in the state.
