Tamil Nadu Politics Vijay Rahul Gandhi Alliance: As Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay prepares to take oath as the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, political focus has sharply shifted towards the expected presence of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi at the swearing-in ceremony in Chennai.
The development is being viewed as more than a ceremonial appearance. Political observers believe it reflects the strengthening relationship between Vijay and Rahul Gandhi, a political equation that has steadily evolved over the years and may now play a larger role in shaping opposition politics in southern India.
The connection between Vijay and the Congress party reportedly dates back nearly two decades. According to sources familiar with past political developments, Vijay had explored the possibility of joining the Congress in 2009. At that time, his political future remained uncertain and he had not yet emerged as a major political force in Tamil Nadu.
Years later, the political landscape has changed dramatically. Vijay now leads a successful coalition government, while the Congress has emerged as a smaller ally within the alliance headed by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
According to sources, Vijay recently addressed a gathering of alliance leaders where he acknowledged the support extended to him by certain Congress leaders during difficult political phases. Among those reportedly mentioned were Rahul Gandhi and Congress strategist Praveen Chakravarty.
Sources claim Vijay expressed appreciation for leaders who believed in his political capabilities even when many others remained doubtful about his long-term prospects in state politics. Analysts believe this shared political history has contributed significantly to the trust between Vijay and the Congress leadership.
Political experts also believe Rahul Gandhi sees strategic importance in maintaining close ties with Vijay. With the Congress struggling to retain a strong independent presence in Tamil Nadu, Vijay’s rise is being viewed as an opportunity for the party to remain politically relevant in the state.
At the same time, Rahul Gandhi is reportedly understood to view Vijay as a dependable secular political force in southern India. Sources suggest the Congress leader believes Vijay has the potential to emerge as a major non-BJP face in the region in the coming years.
The relationship between the two leaders is said to have strengthened further after TVK’s recent electoral victory.
One of the most discussed moments reportedly took place on the day TVK and the Congress finalised their alliance to form the government. During a conversation between the two leaders, Vijay is said to have personally invited Rahul Gandhi to attend the oath-taking ceremony.
Sources claim Vijay addressed Rahul Gandhi as “brother” during the conversation, reflecting the growing personal comfort level between the two leaders. Rahul Gandhi reportedly responded positively and assured Vijay that he would try to attend the ceremony.
On Sunday, Rahul Gandhi arrived in Chennai ahead of the swearing-in event, underlining the political importance attached to the occasion and the growing visibility of the Vijay-Congress partnership.
The latest political developments have gained further significance because of the Congress party’s strained relationship with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) during the election period. Reports suggest Rahul Gandhi skipped certain meetings organised by the DMK campaign despite the parties having previously worked together as allies.
The apparent collapse of the Congress-DMK alliance in Tamil Nadu has added a new dimension to state politics. However, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram has reportedly expressed hope that both parties may continue cooperating at the national level despite differences in the state.
Political observers now believe the growing partnership between Vijay and Rahul Gandhi could become a significant factor in the future of opposition politics in southern India. With TVK’s rise altering the state’s political balance, the relationship between the two leaders is likely to remain under close national scrutiny in the months ahead.
