NEW DELHI: Veteran BJP leader George Kurian on Tuesday resigned as a Union Minister following the expiration of his six-year term in the Rajya Sabha. The move comes after the party decided not to renominate him to the Upper House of Parliament.
According to a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Kurian’s resignation under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The 65-year-old leader hails from Kottayam in Kerala and has previously served as the vice-president of the BJP’s state unit. A lawyer by profession, Kurian has been a familiar face on television debates. He was also frequently seen translating the speeches of Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah into Malayalam during their visits to the southern state.
Kurian was inducted into the Union Cabinet in 2024. The appointment was widely seen as part of the BJP’s political outreach to the Christian community to expand its organizational footprint in Kerala.
He belongs to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, which is one of the most prominent Christian denominations in Kerala. Kurian has been associated with the BJP since its inception in 1980. Over his decades-long political career, he has served as the party’s state general secretary, national secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), and a member of the party’s national executive body.
