CWG 2026: Why India Slipped to 9th Place Despite Medal Tally Rising to 12

Despite adding two silver medals on Day 6 to take its overall count to 12, India slipped from 8th to 9th position in the Commonwealth Games 2026 standings due to a lower gold medal count compared to competing nations.
CWG 2026: Why India Slipped to 9th Place Despite Medal Tally Rising to 12

India added two more medals to its tally on Day 6 of the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, taking its overall count from 10 to 12. Both medals earned at the sports complex were silvers-one coming in weightlifting and the other through a historic performance by Gulveer Singh in athletics.

However, despite the increase in the total medal count, India suffered a drop in its standings on the medals tally rather than a gain.

Why India Dropped to 9th Position
By the end of Day 6, India’s overall tally stood at 12 medals, comprising 2 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze. At the end of Day 5, India held the 8th position with 10 medals. However, despite moving up to 12 medals on Day 6, India slipped one spot to 9th position.

The primary reason for this slide is India missing out on winning more gold medals. Because rankings in the medals tally are determined by the number of gold medals won rather than total medals, India’s higher proportion of silver and bronze relative to gold has held its rank back.

The Gold Difference
The impact of gold medal distribution was clearly visible in the movement of other nations on Day 6:

New Zealand’s Surge: At the end of Day 5, New Zealand was ranked 10th while India was at 8th. On Day 6, New Zealand won 2 additional gold medals, allowing them to jump two spots to 8th place-the position previously held by India—because their overall gold medal count surpassed India’s.

The Nigeria Comparison: Both Nigeria and India currently have a total of 12 medals each. However, Nigeria occupies the 5th spot while India sits at 9th. This difference is again due to gold medals, as Nigeria has won 4 more gold medals than India.
