NEW DELHI: The legal battle over the upcoming film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy has reached the Supreme Court, with film producer Amit Jani challenging a Delhi High Court order that directed the immediate takedown of all promotional material from social media platforms.
In his petition before the top court, Jani has sought an immediate stay on the High Court’s directive, arguing that the order curtails freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Constitution.
The row stems from an interim order passed by the Delhi High Court on July 27. Hearing a plea filed by Bollywood actor Salman Khan, the High Court issued a stern reprimand to the producer, observing that no individual is above the law. The court subsequently ordered the immediate removal of all videos, teasers, and promotional material related to *Kala Hiran* across social media platforms, delivering major relief to the actor.
The controversy began when Jani released the teaser for the film, prompting Khan to move the Delhi High Court to protect his legal rights. In his petition, the actor sought a complete ban on the film’s release and raised serious concerns regarding the infringement of his personality rights.
Representing Khan, his legal team submitted that the actor’s identity, name, and image were being improperly used without his prior consent. They alleged that the film created public confusion, pointing out that the lead actor closely resembles Khan and prominently wears the iconic blue bracelet that has long been his trademark.
Khan’s counsel further argued that despite the actor being acquitted in most related matters through due judicial process, the film was intentionally produced to target him.
In response, counsel for Amit Jani maintained before the High Court that the released content was merely a teaser and did not violate the actor’s personality rights in any manner.
With the petition now filed in the apex court, all eyes are on whether the Supreme Court stays the Delhi High Court’s interim directive or upholds the relief granted to the actor.
