SHIMLA: The upcoming monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha is set to witness heated debates and intense political confrontation between the government and the opposition. The 12th session of the 14th Legislative Assembly will commence on August 21 and run through September 3, featuring a total of 10 sittings.

Sharing details during a press conference, Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania stated that per parliamentary traditions, statements made on the floor of the House are accepted as truth, adding that maintaining productivity remains the collective responsibility of all political parties.

MLAs have mounted extensive preparations to seek answers from the ruling administration on key public concerns. The Vidhan Sabha Secretariat received 1,036 question notices online before the August 18 deadline. These include 787 starred and 249 unstarred questions, all of which have been forwarded to the state government for subsequent action.

Besides standard questions, members submitted notices under several assembly rules, including 13 under Rule 62, two under Rule 63, five under Rule 101, and 15 under Rule 130. Speaker Pathania urged lawmakers to maximize the usage of valuable House time for meaningful discussions on public issues.

The recent destruction caused by heavy rains and flash floods across Himachal Pradesh is expected to take center stage. Legislators have submitted notices demanding details on financial assistance received from the Union Government, the state’s disaster management efforts, and overall flood damage. Other major points of debate will include the state’s financial condition, road and bridge construction, school mergers, the upgrading of educational and health institutions, and filling vacant government posts.

Members have also raised questions concerning public transport, drinking water supply, horticulture, tourism, rising crime rates, and measures to curb drug abuse among youth.

Proceedings will begin at 11 AM on Friday, August 21, with obituary references paying tribute to former MLAs Late Vijendra Singh and Ram Chand Bhatia. August 27 has been designated as ‘Private Members’ Business’.

To ensure smooth proceedings without disruptions, Speaker Pathania has convened an all-party meeting on August 20. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan, Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, and Chief Whip of the BJP Legislature Party Sukhram Chaudhary are scheduled to attend. During the earlier Budget Session, the House logged 16 sittings.
