UNA: In a major crackdown against drug trafficking, the Himachal Pradesh Police in Una district seized a massive consignment of 4 quintals, 52 kilograms, and 660 grams of poppy husk (doda chura post) and arrested two suspects hailing from Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district.
Acting on the directions of Superintendent of Police Sachin Hiremath, district police have been carrying out an intensive campaign against drug smugglers. On the night of July 30-31, a police team led by Mehatpur Police Station In-charge Inspector Ashok Kumar was on patrol and checking vehicles near the Fatehpur temple on the Una-Santoshgarh road.
Around 12:10 AM, police intercepted a suspicious Tata Ace vehicle bearing a Punjab registration number (PB-08 BW-9122) for inspection. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of eight bags containing 1 quintal, 62 kilograms, and 640 grams of poppy husk. Police immediately detained both occupants of the vehicle.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Joga Singh (41), a resident of Dinowal Khurd, Garhshankar, Hoshiarpur, and his accomplice Harpreet Singh (28), a resident of Pandori village, Garhshankar, Hoshiarpur. During initial questioning, the duo disclosed crucial information to the authorities.
Based on their disclosures and identification, the police team raided a location in the Lamlehra area without delay. A search of a tractor-trailer parked at the spot yielded an additional 2 quintals, 90 kilograms, and 20 grams of poppy husk packed in 14 and a half bags.
In total, police recovered 452.660 kg of contraband across both vehicles, which has been sealed and seized as per legal procedure.
Confirming the development, Superintendent of Police Sachin Hiremath said a case under the NDPS Act has been registered against both accused and they have been placed under arrest. Police are now investigating forward and backward linkages to determine the origin of the massive consignment, its intended destination, and other individuals involved in this inter-state racket.
