New York: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has delivered one of his most serious warnings regarding artificial intelligence (AI), pointing out that the technology has grown powerful enough to cause mass harm if used by individuals with malicious intent.
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates noted that AI capabilities could potentially trigger developments threatening billions of lives. Clarifying his stance, he emphasized that while catastrophic outcomes are not guaranteed, the rapidly increasing power and misuse potential of AI warrant urgent attention.
Gates highlighted that modern AI significantly accelerates scientific progress, particularly in biology and genetic research, paving the way for faster drug development, new vaccines, and medical treatments. However, he warned that the exact same capabilities, if manipulated, could give rise to severe biological threats.
Automated cyberattacks represent another primary area of concern. Gates explained that attackers could utilize AI to automate cyber operations, pinpoint system vulnerabilities, and target critical infrastructure such as hospitals, financial institutions, power grids, and government systems.
The tech leader emphasized that the real danger lies not in AI systems autonomously deciding to inflict harm, but in humans exploiting the technology for dangerous objectives.
Despite these warnings, Gates remains optimistic about the potential benefits of AI. He noted that the technology holds the power to drive major breakthroughs in healthcare, education, and agriculture, helping solve complex global challenges.
To mitigate the risks while harnessing the technology’s advantages, Gates urged governments to establish robust safety regulations and oversight mechanisms to match the rapid pace of AI development.
