The long-running Russia-Ukraine war may be moving towards a crucial turning point after Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that the conflict could be nearing its end. Speaking during Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, Putin made remarks that have triggered renewed discussions around possible peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Addressing journalists at the Kremlin after the Victory Day events, Putin said that the ongoing conflict was “moving towards its conclusion.” His comments are being viewed by many observers as one of the clearest signals yet from Moscow that Russia may now be open to resolving the conflict through negotiations.
The Russia-Ukraine war has continued for more than four years, resulting in heavy casualties, destruction, and severe geopolitical tensions involving Western nations and NATO allies. Putin’s latest remarks have therefore attracted global attention, especially as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have repeatedly failed in the past.
During the media interaction, Putin also repeated his willingness to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for direct talks. However, he placed a major condition on such a meeting. According to Putin, any face-to-face summit should happen only after both sides have already reached a final peace agreement.
He stated that a meeting in a third country would be possible if all terms of a peace treaty had already been finalized beforehand. Putin also stressed that any future agreement must consider what he described as a “long-term historical perspective.”
The statement is being interpreted as an indication that Moscow could be preparing for high-level direct negotiations with Ukraine. At the same time, Putin emphasized that while outside countries may assist in diplomatic efforts, the final resolution of the war ultimately depends on Russia and Ukraine themselves.
Putin also thanked the United States for its role in helping ongoing diplomatic communication move forward. However, he maintained that the conflict remains a serious issue requiring careful handling and long-term planning.
According to reports cited during the press conference, Putin accused Western countries of escalating tensions with Russia while supporting Ukraine militarily and politically. He claimed that Western powers had initially promised support to Ukraine but later encouraged continued confrontation with Moscow.
The Russian President further argued that Ukraine had been used as a geopolitical tool by Western nations pursuing their own strategic interests. His comments came only hours after his Victory Day speech, where he once again defended Russia’s military actions in Ukraine.
This year’s Victory Day parade in Moscow appeared notably smaller compared to previous years. No tanks reportedly rolled through Red Square during the event. Instead, giant screens displayed missiles, drones, and fighter aircraft as Russian troops marched through the capital.
Russian soldiers involved in the Ukraine conflict also participated in the parade. During his speech, Putin praised Russian military personnel for their role in the war and accused NATO countries, including the United States, of supporting aggressive actions against Russia.
Media reports surrounding the event also mentioned the alleged participation of North Korean soldiers alongside Russian forces in the Kursk region. Reports claimed that some North Korean troops were also present during the military parade in Moscow.
Putin’s remarks have now intensified speculation over whether serious peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine could finally take shape in the coming months. However, no official confirmation regarding formal peace talks or a timeline for negotiations has been announced so far.
Despite the cautious optimism generated by Putin’s comments, the situation on the ground remains sensitive, with both sides continuing to maintain strong military positions. The coming weeks are expected to be closely watched by the international community for any concrete diplomatic developments.
